Why keep your car keys in the microwave

In today's world, almost every family has its own car, and sometimes several. Buying a car is a pretty serious purchase, because in addition to the initial investment, spending on diagnostics and troubleshooting will certainly follow.

In addition, many car owners, regardless of the age of their car, fear the phenomenon of theft or theft of certain components.

Why put the keys to the car in the microwave for the night?

Sometimes fraudsters work so cleanly that they don’t even leave damage on the car, which even scares car owners. For example, in 2017 a whole wave of hijackings swept across Britain: about 89 thousand owners lost their cars. Not surprisingly, resourceful Europeans have come up with their own methods of protection, albeit not quite ordinary ones.

Now almost every car is equipped with a contactless access system, which allows you to start the engine or open the car’s doors by simply pressing a button on the key fob, being at a decent distance from it. Undoubtedly, it is very convenient. Especially in the cold season, when it is necessary to warm up the car in advance before the trip. But also contactless access has several drawbacks:

  • Suddenly, a battery in the key can take off and prevent you from accessing the car;
  • signal radius will not be enough for the distance you are at.

But the second drawback can turn into a real problem, because with the help of special devices not only the owner himself can expand it, but also the hijackers. These devices lengthen the signal and increase the range of radio waves. One part of the device is located near the car, and the second - near the intended location of the key fob, for example, at the front door, because many keep their keys in the corridor. Thus, fraudsters block the distance from the house to the car and with little effort get access to the car.

Special safes for keys and other devices help to protect yourself from this kind of scam, but you can’t find them everywhere. Instead, you can use household appliances: any equipment that blocks radio waves due to internal insulation will do. Of course, you can simply wrap the keys in a couple of layers of aluminum foil, but it's much easier to just put the key chain in the fridge or microwave oven for the night, and in the morning, as if nothing had happened, go about your business.

Important! In the case of a microwave, the main thing is to not accidentally use it for its intended purpose while the keys are inside.

Does being in the microwave harm the keys?

Many are still concerned about the question of whether microwave radiations are harmful and how they affect the heated food and the human body as a whole. At one time, these devices were even banned in the USSR and in Germany for the following reasons:

  • It was believed that waves affect the molecular composition of food;
  • Electromagnetic waves have a great effect on the human body;
  • In the food, heated in a microwave oven, many nutrients are converted into carcinogens.

But today all manufacturers use high-quality insulating materials that ensure reliability and reduce the harmful effects of the device. In addition, the radiation affects objects inside the microwave oven only when it produces direct heating, which means that the keys in the idle device are safe and this does not harm them at all.
