Tile first on the floor or on the walls

The tile is the best solution for facing walls and floors in the bathroom, toilet, kitchen and other rooms where a waterproof and durable surface is required. The process of laying tiles is complicated, but, nevertheless, it can be made independently.

And professionals with years of experience argue about what to revet in the first place: the floor or walls? Opinions are contradictory, however, both options have their loyal supporters.

Many people prefer to lay the floor first, explaining their choice with several main advantages:

  • the joint between the wall and the floor in this case is easier to control, which means it is possible to make it as less visible as possible;
  • laying walls is much easier to lead from the floor.

However, the latter advantage is lost if, for example, when starting to work from the walls, to lay tiles with a pre-measured gap (to simplify actions, you can use an ordinary bar). In this case, you will not be limited from where to start laying tiles: from the ceiling, from below, or, as some advise, from the middle. You can pre-install the plinth, if, of course, it is included in your repair plans.

Important: the main rule is to stick to the same direction of lining, and not to lay tiles in a free order.

On the advantage, based on the fact that the joint between the walls and the floor is convenient to control only if you start the work from the bottom, there are also conflicting opinions. Many believe that if the master has good skills in this business, then it will not be difficult for him to make a neat joint when starting work from the walls, and with crooked hands and laying the tiles starting from the floor will not save the deplorable result.

Getting started with wall tiling has more powerful arguments. Everyone is ready to come up with new ones, but, in general, the following statements are the most popular:

  • Glue laundering from the floor. In the process of laying tile on the wall, glue drips onto the floor even from the most careful craftsman, so experienced people strongly advise laying tiles on the floor at the very end.

Reference: Of course, you can cover the floor with newspapers or film, but they can move during work, and simply interfere. In the case of a film, the process becomes less secure at all, since it is easy to slip on it.

  • Drop tools. In the process of laying there are cases when a working tool unexpectedly slips out of your hands. If the floor is already laid, then dropping a heavy object on it may damage the tile.
  • Time is simple. After laying the tile, it is necessary to give her time to "rest", avoiding any impact on her as much as possible. If you start facing from the walls, then you will not have to interrupt your work, and you can immediately proceed to the floor. Otherwise, you will need to leave the floor for a few days, and only after that continue laying the tile on the walls.

When you start laying the tile, it does not matter on what surface (as if it is the floor, walls or ceiling), first of all it is necessary to level it. A tile laid on an uneven surface will look sloppy and more susceptible to destruction.

It is worthwhile to buy a tile with a margin, since at any moment you can accidentally damage several units, and tiles from different batches may differ slightly in shade, which will be very noticeable in the general appearance of the room.

And if you nevertheless decided to start laying the tile from the floor, and then, in the process, you glue the glue, then you need to erase it immediately: the faster, the less effort it will take.
