DIY baby crib

Creating comfortable conditions for children from birth becomes possible thanks to the acquisition of various attributes that facilitate the development and upbringing of the child. This is a stroller, walkers, a changing table, and then - feeding. The cost of children's household items is high and each time, faced with the need for another purchase, you seriously think about the possibility of self-production. One of these attributes is a crib for a child and you can make it yourself.

The advantages of self-made crib

Buying a new product forces you to bear the costs, and considerable. The quality of the crib assembled at the factory does not always meet the needs of the buyer. The activity of children for whom the product is purchased often causes breakdowns in the fastener connections of the child’s attribute. Making a crib with your own hands will allow you to build a reliable design from such materials that will meet the requirements of the user.

The use of individual sizes will make it possible to use the product until the child’s independently established age. The design of the product will have a unique design. If necessary, the crib can be made rocking or equipped with shelves for linen. Buying a finished product does not always satisfy the consumer. Self-production will allow to realize any wishes of parents and make maximum use of the free space of the children's room.

Decide on a model

Depending on the amount of free space, the age of the child and the wishes of the parents, determine the type of crib:

  • classic
  • rocking chair;
  • with drawers;
  • two-tier;
  • in the form of some of the objects (machine, train, butterfly ...).

When a baby is just born and the required product is made as temporary, then choose a classic or swinging model. If the size of the room is small and along with the bed in the nursery it is necessary to arrange shelves for linen, then a preference is given to the crib with drawers. If there are two or more children, the construction of a structure with several tiers will be correct. When a child grows up and there is a desire to emphasize individual characteristics, the design of a children's bed in the form of an object or animal will allow the baby to feel cozy and comfortable.

The main elements of a crib

The designs of different models externally differ from each other, but the basis of any berth will be:

  • vertical support racks;
  • frame beams or rails, longitudinal and transverse, depending on the design of the supports;
  • bottom with or without lamellas, depending on the material of the bottom;
  • safety rails (for small children);
  • drawers, if any, are provided during design.

For the manufacture of all parts of a crib, it will be correct to use planed boards, which have been carefully sanded. The bottom is made of plywood, if necessary, reinforced with transverse bars to improve strength. The cylindrical balusters of the railing are also sanded to ensure a smooth surface.

IMPORTANT! So that the child does not get hurt and does not get a splinter, after polishing, all details of the assembled structure are carefully inspected. After that, using sandpaper, chamfer the corner surfaces and make them with a minimum rounding (0.5-1 mm)!

Do-it-yourself simple baby crib

From the moment a child is born, there is a need to determine the location of an individual sleeping place. It is not difficult to make a crib with a simple rectangular design, and the ability to adjust the bottom height will allow the baby to be given proper attention in the first months of life.

For manufacturing, you will need:

  • processed wooden slats 60x25 mm (or a similar size) - for the frame of uprights;
  • polished bars 30x40 mm - for the frame of the longitudinal railing;
  • wooden rods with a diameter of 15-20 mm (future balusters);
  • 10 mm thick plywood sheet to cover the bottom.

The sizes of the finished crib made of wood, and accordingly the components, each one chooses independently. The most commonly used sizes are recommendations:

  • height - 800-900 mm;
  • length - 1250-1350 mm;
  • width - 650-700 mm;
  • railing height - 450-600 mm;
  • the distance between balusters is 100-140 mm.

Before starting work, it is advisable to make a sketch of a children's bed and detailing the constituent elements with the dimensions and the required number of each of the profiles. After this, the necessary carpentry tools are prepared and proceed to manufacture.

ATTENTION! The bottom is made of plywood sheet, 10 mm thick. But the excess of children's energy requires the use of increased thickness of the material or the manufacture of the bottom frame!

Manufacturing steps:

  1. First of all, cut the required number of blanks of the desired length, each of the profiles.
  2. Proceed to the assembly of the side pillars. In the transverse rails of the sidewalls, holes are drilled for the installation of balusters, then they are inserted, having previously been glued. After that, they are connected to the vertical support posts. The fastening of the crossbars with rods to the support can be made in the form of a tenon groove or by means of confirmants.
  3. In the manufacture of the bottom frame, any of the beam profiles is used; for rigidity, it is reinforced with several transverse rails. The joints of the carcass bars are performed using confirmants or self-tapping screws.
  4. A plywood sheet cut to size is installed on the prepared skeleton and attached to it.
  5. The bottom is installed between the support posts at a height of not less than 200 mm, if the child is very small, then raised by 400-500 mm.
  6. After that, balusters are inserted into the longitudinal frame rails and side rails are installed.
  7. At the end of assembly, the finished structure is varnished or painted in several layers, allowed to dry for two to three days, until the odor from the applied dye is eliminated.

IMPORTANT! Used wooden blanks should have a moisture content of not more than 25%! The use of raw timber will affect the shape of the assembled structure!

For the convenience of using a crib, one of the longitudinal frames is removable or adjustable in height. This is taken into account when assembling a berth. Removing or adjusting the railing level is achieved through the use of special fasteners that provide the necessary functionality of this element. The change in height can be achieved by dividing the frame into two parts or by using an additional rail. Removing and installing the top element will allow you to change the height, depending on the need.

Making a crib with drawers

If necessary, the construction of sliding shelves, measure the size of the free space under the bottom of the already assembled structure, as well as between the side support racks and the walls or furniture located nearby. For the lower cavity, a horizontal cabinet is made, equipped with two or three drawers in a row in height. And for free room space, they make a cabinet with drawers, the height of which reaches the level of the railing, and with increased demand for shelves - a larger size.

The initial planning for making a wooden bed with drawers will make better use of usable space. Such designs are performed with supporting racks of solid material, which makes it possible to fasten the guide rails to them.

How to make a rocking cot for babies

The manufacture of a swinging structure differs from the usual one in the presence of a supporting transverse arc between the vertical legs of the bed, which are rigidly connected to each other. It is made larger than the width of the product, and the outer radius of the arcuate partition has a value twice the height of the berth. For example, at a height of 800 mm - 1500-1700 mm.

The outer edges of the runners make curved in the opposite direction or install additional bars. This allows you to limit the angle of the bed and avoid tipping over, which is a very important point, especially when the child is left alone.

A rocking crib can be made in another way that uses the principle of a cradle. To do this, the end walls are made of two planes: one of them is the supporting one, and the other limits the berth. A groove is made in the support column, and a rod of the corresponding diameter, but not less than 50 mm, is inserted into the end part of the cradle. The berth is suspended on rods with a horizontal axis and swings freely in different directions.

Original bed for older children

As the children grow up, the need for a small berth disappears, and a full bed for the child is still very large. Making a crib-machine will solve the issue of comfortable rest for adolescents who have reached the age of 3.

Like a simple design, the machine will require the manufacture of support legs, bottom and longitudinal frame elements. Cross beams are made in the form of end parts of the car: the front bumper is at the feet, and the rear, with elevation, is at the head. The side components are cut out in the form of a silhouette of a car model that the child likes. All elements are assembled into a single product, then painted with bright colors and, after drying, they are used with pleasure.

ATTENTION! The inner cavity of the bed can be used to store linen! To do this, the bottom of the product is equipped with a lifting mechanism, and slightly above the floor, the inside is sewn up with fiberboard or plywood.

Independent production of a children's bed will allow maximum use of the interior space of the room, provide a reliable sleep for the child and, very importantly, deliver moral satisfaction to all family members.
