What is better fan heater or heat gun

In our climate, the issue of heating quality is always very acute. If the room is not connected to central heating or it is not enough for comfort, you can install autonomous heaters. They can become both an addition and an alternative to the general system. The most common options are a heat gun and a fan heater. To determine which of the devices to install, you need to figure out how they differ from each other.

The principle of operation of the fan heater

Fan heater is a complex consisting of a heating element and a conventional fan. Depending on the heating element, there are the following types:

  • ceramic (can be based on glass or metal);
  • spiral (a metal spiral is heated, most often from chromium);
  • TEN or tubular (a heating element and a filler with a high coefficient of thermal conductivity are placed in a hollow pipe).

Spiral models are the cheapest. They heat the room faster than others, but they also fail earlier. Another drawback is that during operation they become very hot and the dust deposited on the elements burns out. Combustion products enter the air and an unpleasant odor appears. Ceramic and heating elements do not have this drawback.

As a rule, all fans are powered by electricity. The maximum power is 2 kW / h, it is enough to heat a room of 10 square meters. To warm the air in a room of this size, a fan heater with maximum power will take about 30 minutes.

They are also classified by type of placement, type of control and functionality.

IMPORTANT! Fan heaters should not be used in rooms with high humidity, and also close to chemical and explosive substances.

The principle of operation of the heat gun

The heat gun is a type of fan heater, but much more powerful. Designed to heat rooms larger than 10 square meters.

Unlike a fan heater, the gun can work not only from electricity, but also on fuel (gas, diesel fuel, kerosene). But when operated on fuel, combustion products enter the air, which negatively affects the human body.

IMPORTANT!Gas heat guns (direct heating) have a high fire hazard and are prohibited for use in residential premises.

As a heating element in a heat gun, a spiral or a heater is used.

The infrared heat gun differs from the rest in the principle of its work and mechanism. There is no familiar fan in it, and the air heats up under the influence of infrared radiation. It does not immediately heat the entire room, but only a separate section of it. Because of this feature, it is mainly used on construction sites.

How is a fan heater different from a heat gun

The principle of operation and the device of these devices are the same. The main difference in power.

CharacteristicFan heaterHeat gun
Source of energyElectricity Electricity, gas, liquid fuel
Power kW / h1-24-30
BodyPlasticMetal

The metal body makes the gun heavier, but also adds strength to it.

Another difference in efficiency. Due to the fact that the heat gun can run on fuel, the cost of its operation is much lower.

A common drawback is that both the fan heater and the gun greatly dry the air and burn oxygen. They are not intended for continuous operation, and manufacturers recommend periodically ventilating the room after they are turned off.

Which is better: gun or fan heater?

These devices are designed to work in different conditions. To make the right choice, you must first evaluate the room itself, and first of all calculate the minimum power of the device. For this, the formula is applied: 1 kW per 25 cubic meters of space. In this case, it is necessary to take into account additional factors that affect this ratio:

  • the presence of central heating;
  • area of windows;
  • thermal insulation.

Important: ordinary household outlets rated for 3.5 kW. Therefore, heaters with a power of more than 3 kW can not be left connected for a long time.

Advantages and disadvantages of this heating equipment:

The area of the heated room-+The fan heater is designed for heating small residential premises up to 10 square meters. m
Security+/-+/-Both devices are relatively safe in compliance with the rules of operation. However, there are factors harmful to humans that accompany their work.
Duration of work-+/-Not designed for continuous operation, but thanks to its power, the heat gun warms up much faster. Subject to safety rules, it can operate continuously for several days.
Additional features+-Modern fan heaters are equipped with a swivel mechanism, protection against accidental rollovers, a timer and a thermostat. Heat guns rarely have additional features. The exception is powerful stationary models.
Appearance+-Fan heaters are presented in a variety of cases. A huge selection of shapes and colors allows you to choose a fan for the design of the room.

As a rule, a fan heater is enough for heating an apartment. The heat gun is great for hangars, garages and other non-residential premises.
