DIY spring mattress repair

There are several ways to help determine if your mattress needs restoration. Damage to the casing, deformation of internal metal parts, wear of the filler are the main causes of product repair.

Necessary materials

The choice of tools depends on the cause of the damage. To replace the upholstery by hand, you only need glue and a suitable fabric in color. If the integrity of the springs is broken, you will have to stock up on new parts. The main thing that will be needed in the process of overhaul is a new upholstery, a hammer, nails.

You'll need:

  1. furniture stapler;
  2. elastic cord;
  3. filler (foam rolls);
  4. decorative lining;
  5. lining (any breathable and durable fabric);
  6. slats (7 x 2).

When troubleshooting, it is important to have pliers and wire on hand. All work is divided into several stages. First, the mattress is disassembled, then new springs are installed, strapping is carried out, and at the end sheathe the product (assembly).

Dismantling the mattress

The best place for repairs is a barn or other non-residential premises. During the period of operation, dust and debris accumulate inside the product. Therefore, a good option is to use a vacuum cleaner when working.

First, the mattress is turned upside down. Position it, providing a flat surface. To make it easy to approach the mattress on each side, it is placed on four stools. Then they carefully release the product from its contents: remove old nails, pliers take out paper clips, remove the decorative upholstery fabric and remove the soft rollers.

Cleaning

To properly clean the mattress from dirt, it is recommended to use a pile cloth and a vacuum cleaner. If you are doing your home renovation, cover the furniture and carpets with oilcloth. Torn upholstery fabric will have to be replaced. The cloth separating the springs is also removed and thoroughly cleaned with a damp cloth. After preliminary work, you can do an inspection of the internal parts.

Mount

The stage that requires the most effort and time. It includes several steps:

  • checking the health of parts;
  • installation of the frame;
  • strapping springs.

First, the cord connecting the springs is removed, nails are removed from the frame. Then you need to inspect the springs and return to their original position. Broken parts are thrown out, new ones are installed. To do this, the springs are nailed to the rails using nails that bend inward. It is preliminary recommended that precise markings be made on the product body.

Important! So that the mattress does not form bumps, all springs are located strictly vertically (approximately on a line 8 cm from the height of the frame).

Please note that in orthopedic mattresses individual springs are in special bags. And in the usual there are three ways of fastening:

  • using wooden slats. Sometimes it’s enough just to hammer a loose part with a hammer;
  • the use of fabric straps on top of wooden battens;
  • fabric belts. They give the mattress orthopedic properties.

If fabric straps were used in the manufacture of the mattress, it is necessary to cut the wooden slats yourself. Elastic fabric belts are fixed on them. The length of the slats should match the width of the mattress.

To replace the spring pouch in orthopedic models, you will need an element with new springs. It is sewn with a regular needle and a strong thread.

Strapping

After checking and securing the springs, the strapping process is carried out. For this purpose, you need a strong rope (diameter of about 3 cm). First, they take nails and drive them in front of a separate spring row. Then the nails are bent to create a kind of hooks. A cord will be wound on them.

First of all, it is necessary to tackle the transverse springs. Cord process each spring separately. Then they begin to tie the elements in the longitudinal direction. In order to be effective, they are held together with transverse ones.

Attention! During work, pay attention to the cord tension. It should not be too high - otherwise it turns out that the springs are at a close distance from each other.

In conclusion, the springs are treated diagonally. The angle in relation to previous harnesses should be 45 degrees. At the end of these works, the nails left by the hooks are completely bent.

Sheathing

The final stage of repair is the pulling of the mattress with the outer upholstery. To do this, first cover the spring block with a lining. The material must be taken dense, for example, tarpaulin (burlap or dermantine is also suitable). So, the lining base is placed on top of the spring block and fixed with it with a conventional stapler.

Then take a sealant (foam rubber, synthetic winterizer). These rollers are lined in selected places. This ensures quality styling. From above, the mattress should be covered with a decorative cloth, and the edges of the upholstery should be gently tucked inward.

Remember! The fabric when attaching must be placed in the form of a scarf. This will protect the corners of the furniture.

How to increase the life of the mattress

The wear resistance of the mattress varies according to the filler. The most durable are mattresses with natural latex and coconut fillers (+ independent springs). The average duration of his service will be 12 years. If the material is artificial, then the mattress will last about eight years.

Even high-quality mattresses need to be changed every 5-7 years, as over time they slip and accumulate dust mites.

Tips can help to increase product life.

Undesirable:

  • Allow children to jump on the mattress:
  • keep the mattress near heating appliances;
  • to bend during transportation.

Information on caring for a particular model is on the label. It is forbidden to iron the mattress and store in rooms with high humidity. It is recommended to dry it regularly (once every six months) and ventilate in the fresh air. To preserve the appearance of decorative cladding, you need to use special covers.

It is necessary to buy a mattress taking into account your own body weight. In the first 2-3 weeks after the acquisition, it is advised to turn the product over.

This is done as follows: first you need to swap the head of the mattress and the place where the legs are; then flip face down. This will restore the original shape and orthopedic properties.
